Using reference tracks in house production
A reference is a ruler, not a template.
Even experienced engineers mix against references.
Pick
- Two or three tracks close to yours in style and sound.
- WAV, not a stream rip or MP3.
Match loudness
A master is far louder than your mix and makes it sound weak. Turn the reference down until it matches. The free Youlean Loudness Meter helps.
Set up
- Put the reference on its own track and keep it muted. Solo it to flip between them.
- Using processing on the Main track? Route the reference around it, or you'll hear it through your chain.
- Line up the drops.
Compare
- Low end: kick and sub against the reference.
- Tone: boxy kick, weak low mids, harsh 2–4 kHz.
- Mono: does anything vanish in yours?
- Small speakers: does the bass still read?
- Arrangement: mark where parts enter and leave. See the arrangement guide.
Flick back and forth quickly. Don't over-listen.
Don't copy
Match the sound, not the song. Keep melodies, hooks and samples your own.
FAQ
Why level-match?
A louder master makes your mix sound weak. Matching makes the comparison fair.
How many references?
Two or three.
